How to Disassemble, Clean and Reassemble your Glock 17 Handgun?

Step 1:Disassembling the glock 17 handgun

Safety tip! Make absolutely certain the weapon is not loaded. Remove the magazine and any rounds in the chamber. Field strip the firearm.

Push out the pin in the back of the grip with a punch and the other pins in the area above the trigger of your Glock 17 frame. Simply take out the slide release. Gently pry out the locking block. To remove the trigger housing or trigger assembly, lift out the assembly by pulling on the ejector; this should come out in one piece. Carefully pull the trigger bar forward and slip it out. Once the piece is loose, detach the spring.

To remove the firing pin from the slide, first hold the back plate down with your thumb. Press down below the firing pin (in the gap near it) with a glock pin or a punch. Carefully push unto the back spring. Slide out the back plate and remove the firing pin.Remove the extractor plunger along with the extractor plunger bearing, and extractor spring. Push down on the firing pin safety block; the extractor should fall out. Pry off the firing pin safety block; be careful since this is spring-loaded.

Voila! Your Glock 17 Handgun has been successfully disassembled. Its parts are now ready to be cleaned using an ultrasonic cleaner.

Step 2: Cleaning the Glock 17 Handgun

Use the weapons kit brushes and tools to remove powder residues, bullet shavings, carbon and other loose contaminants. Tip: If the weapon is extremely dirty it should be cleaned using hot water to prepare the cleaning bath.

Put the hammer in the cocked position. Lift the star shell ejector and place a spacer between the star and cylinder to enhance cleaning action. Position your weapon parts in the mesh basket in a way to avoid air entrapment. Lower the basket into the cleaning solution and set the timer for 7-10 minutes. Cleaning time depends on the condition of the weapon.

At the end of the cycle remove the handgun components from the bath. If they are not clean replace them in the bath until the cleaning is complete. Do not reach into an operating ultrasonic bath. Remove the basket from the bath if you want to inspect or rearrange the parts.

After cleaning rinse the parts in fresh water to remove all traces of the cleaning solution, shake them to remove excess water and allow them to drain. Compressed air will aid in this process.

Return the weapon parts to the basket.

Next place the lubricating pan into the ultrasonic cleaner again making certain that the bottom of the lubricating pan is in contact with the ultrasonic cleaning solution. Put the basket into the lubricating solution and set the timer for 10 minutes. Ultrasonic waves will pass from the ultrasonic cleaning bath to the lubricating bath and thoroughly lubricate the weapon parts.

After the lubricating step remove the parts and allow them to drain. Do not blow dry. Inspect then oil the parts according to the manufacturer’s instructions before reassembly.

Step 3:Reassembling the Glock 17 Handgun

To piece the slide together, insert the extractor plunger (solid part first). Slip the extractor in place. Replace the firing pin safety piece and push this in. Drop the firing pin into the slide. Use a small tool to fit into the gap below the firing pin and push down on. As you do this, slide in the back plate part way. Keeping the back plate in place, press down on the ejector plunger (the small plastic button near the back plate) with a Glock pin or punch, and slide the back plate the rest of the way in. This should snap into place.

Piece the trigger housing back together. Reattach the spring unto the trigger bar and the housing component. Put the trigger bar into the component by putting it in place and sliding it forward. On the frame, drop in this trigger assembly. Push in the short headless pin into the back of the grip. Put in the locking block and then the slide release lever into its slot. Push in the locking block pin. To replace the trigger pin, gently jerk the slide release lever as you push this pin back in.

Make sure the pieces are lined up. Check and test the frame (rack and cycle). Now piece the Glock 17 hand gun together with the slide, barrel, recoil spring and its frame.

Congratulations! You have just reassembled your “brand new” Glock 17 Handgun.

Additional Weapon Cleaning Tips:

Oils that rise to the surface of the bath should be skimmed off and disposed of properly. When the ultrasonic handgun cleaner solution becomes discolored or cleaning takes longer it is time to replace it. Drain the tank and dispose of the spent solution according to local regulations. Take the time to remove sludge that settled to the bottom of the tank then clean the tank.
